What is the procedure for taking PA Speakers out of winter storage?

Here is a 3-point plan for taking speakers out of storage. Moisture is our enemy.

  1. Visual Inspection
  • Check for condensation, mould or rodent activity.
  • Inspect connectors, cables and ports for corrosion and rigidity.
  • Ensure ports and vents are clean and clear of restrictions.
  • If you see dust or dirt, clean it away gently.
  • Consider using an airline to blow dust away gently.
  1. Internal Checks
  • Open the front grill and inspect for visible damage.
  • Spread fingers and gently press on the paper cone for unrestricted movement.
  • Remove the back panel and remove and remake all connections.
  • Tighten all bolts, fixings, screws and mounts. Drivers on the diagonal.
  1. Powering on
  • Condition the speakers for 24 hours at 19 Degrees Celsius (room temperature).
  • Test resistance with a multi-meter to ensure proper continuity.
  • Start at low volume and listen for distortion, rattling, or missing frequencies.
  • Check for buzzing, distortion, or imbalances between speakers.
  • Ensure horns, tweeters, and subs are all functioning correctly.
