BishopSound Sustainability

Built to Last. Built to Repair.

At BishopSound, we believe great professional audio equipment shouldn't be disposable. That simple principle sits at the heart of our approach to sustainability.

Repair Before Replace

Can we repair it and keep it working?

Workshop note
“How do we replace the whole thing?”
“Can we repair it and keep it working?”

A well-built professional loudspeaker cabinet can remain serviceable for many years. Over time, individual components such as loudspeaker drivers may wear, become damaged or simply no longer perform as they once did. That doesn't necessarily mean the entire loudspeaker needs replacing.

Where a cabinet remains structurally sound, repairing it or replacing the affected components can give professional audio equipment a new lease of life. That's why BishopSound designs and supplies replacement loudspeaker drivers and woofers suitable for use in a wide variety of existing cabinets not only our own.

Whether you're repairing a BishopSound cabinet, restoring an older PA system or breathing new life into equipment from another manufacturer, we'd rather help you keep a serviceable cabinet working than see it unnecessarily discarded.

The Circular Economy in Practice

It's about extending life in the first place.

For us, sustainability isn't simply about what happens when a product reaches the end of its life. Our approach is based on some straightforward principles.

Principle 01

Extend, Don't Discard

If a cabinet remains structurally sound and suitable for continued use, replacing a worn or damaged component may allow it to remain in service for many more years.

Principle 02

Repair Over Replace

Where practical, repairing equipment or replacing a failed component can avoid the need to manufacture, purchase and transport an entirely new loudspeaker system.

Principle 03

Design for Disassembly

Wherever practical, we design and select components so that parts such as loudspeaker drivers can be accessed, removed and replaced rather than permanently sealed into the product.

Principle 04

Materials Matter

Our Made in Britain cabinets use responsibly sourced birch plywood selected for strength, durability and acoustic performance. We also consider the adhesives and finishes used in production.

Manufacturing in Britain

Sustainability and British manufacturing are closely connected.

Our Made in Britain cabinet range is manufactured and assembled here in Britain, supporting British manufacturing skills and businesses. Manufacturing more of our products here also gives us greater visibility over how those products are constructed and allows us to influence decisions around materials, serviceability, repairability and future product development.

We're open about the fact that not every component currently originates in Britain. Our loudspeaker drivers, for example, are presently manufactured by specialist production partners overseas to BishopSound specifications. Our ambition is simple: where it is technically and commercially practical to manufacture more in Britain, we want to do so.

You can read more about this in our What “Made in Britain” Really Means at BishopSound page.
Digital Product Passports

Making products repairable is only part of the challenge.

People also need access to the right information. That's why we're introducing Digital Product Passports across our UK-made cabinet range — an accessible record of information associated with a product throughout its lifecycle.

Responsible end-of-life decisions

For BishopSound, this isn't simply about preparing for future regulation. It's about creating a better connection between the product, the manufacturer and the person responsible for keeping that product working. Because if professional equipment is going to remain in service for longer, the information needed to maintain and repair it needs to remain available too.

Supporting the Next Generation

Sustainability isn't only about materials.

It's also about skills and knowledge. BishopSound works with engineering students and academic staff, including independent loudspeaker testing using an anechoic chamber, and has also worked on product development with education partners.

Collaborating with education gives young engineers practical exposure to professional audio while helping support the technical knowledge Britain will need if we're going to continue developing and manufacturing products here in the future. For us, investing in British engineering skills is another part of building a more sustainable professional-audio industry.

Keeping Great Sound Alive

The most sustainable loudspeaker isn't necessarily the newest one.

The professional-audio industry has traditionally been very good at developing new products. We think it also needs to become better at keeping existing products working. Every cabinet that can be repaired and returned to service represents equipment, materials and craftsmanship that continue to have value.

For customers, that can mean extending the life of an existing PA system rather than automatically replacing it. For BishopSound, it means designing, manufacturing and supporting products with their whole lifecycle in mind.

It's the one that keeps working.
